Further down the beach I wander, towards the distant crumbling walls of a Portuguese fort, past my hotel turn-off and eventually leaving the bars behind.
A rust-bucket tanker is beached offshore, leaning precariously sideward out to sea. Lazy ripples of waves roll, flopping onto pebbly sand like bursting champagne bubbles.
Young dogs run up and down the beach, yapping and barking, playing chasing games. Others sleep flat out in the sun with toothy smiling grins.
Faustino sits alert and alone, on abstract beds of fishing nets and floats.
